Dementia Care

Dementia is an overall term for diseases and conditions characterized by a decline in memory, language, problem-solving and other thinking skills that affect a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia.

Using sensory stimulation therapy helps people with Alzheimer’s disease: everyday objects can trigger positive emotions and memories. Using everyday objects to stimulate senses can trigger emotions and memories in seniors with Alzheimer’s who have lost their ability to connect with the world around them.

At A Senior Retreat, Adult Day Services our most prominent diagnosis that our team works with is Dementia. In our adult day care center, we have “interactive” decor, such as our wall of hats, handbags and scarves.

In our Life Enrichment space at the adult day care center, we have several stations that are designed for our Friends to explore and hopefully, spark memories and conversations. These stations consist of the vanity station of hats and scarves, laundry station to sort/match socks or hang them on the line, fishing station full of barb-free lures, rattle traps and bobbers and a handyman station with wrenches, bolts and washers of various sizes to sort.

We also offer craft time, where friends get creative with hands on projects! Teaming up with Central Indiana Woodworkers, for many years our friends at A Senior Retreat have donated their time and talent, providing toys for toddlers during the holidays. Just another way A Senior Retreat provides purpose for the older adults.
