We believe that every person is a treasure!

A Senior Retreat provides planned program of activities in a professional care setting designed for older adults who require supervised care during the day, or those who are isolated and lonely. Our center located in Martinsville, IN enables seniors to socialize and enjoy planned activities in a group setting. At the same time, we offer family caregivers respite from caregiving duties while knowing that their loved one is in a safe place.

Meet Susan Lowe

With over 25 years working in Senior Care, I opened A Senior Retreat, Adult Day Services to decrease senior isolation, improve the family caregiver peace of mind and give seniors a purpose again through socialization and engagement with peers and activities.

After working in the Senior Care industry for 20+ years, I did some research on opening an Adult Day Care Center and learned that most rural communities in Indiana did not have this service and seniors were potentially doing without needed assistance. After achieving my goal to become a licensed administrator and run an assisted living community, I still had a strong desire to serve my senior neighbors in my community.

I put together a business plan and my investor helped me with the initial start-up costs. The name came from my desire to create a fun, warm, welcoming environment for seniors (Our Friends) to “retreat” while their family caregiver was at work or needed time away. Thus, A Senior Retreat, Adult Day Services came to mind.

Initially I looked at purchasing/renting a house to serve 10-12 seniors per day, but my journey led to a large vacant church in Martinsville, Indiana. At first the idea of the vast space was scary, but I trusted that my hard work would potentially pay off and serve upwards of 25-30 seniors per day! I spent the next four months, selling pews, cleaning and decorating the over 4000 sq ft main level to transform it into the Adult Day Center while sharing the story along the way on our Facebook Page followers.

My nephew was a senior at Mooresville High School and participated in an Area 31 graphic design program and created my logo before he graduated from high school. The butterflies symbolize seniors when they participate in peer activities and find purpose and happiness rather than isolation at home in front of a television. It’s AMAZING! They spread their wings and fly!

Our opening week, we accepted our first Friend after his rehab in an area facility. His daughter works full time and now has peace of mind while he spends his days with us at A Senior Retreat. He loves the program and is our biggest fan! Our program saves him thousands of dollars each month as an alternative to home care, assisted living or long term care. He spends his days through the week with us and his evenings and weekends with his loving family. It truly is a win-win!
